Nato is a defensive alliance, but not in the eyes of the Kremlin. For years, Vladimir Putin has regarded the organization’s eastern enlargement as a threat to his country. The Russian president now says European attitudes are prolonging the war with Ukraine, while Nato insists Moscow’s belligerence against its neighbour shows the real threat to regional security is Russia.
