A fragile ceasefire between the United States and Iran collapsed amid tensions over the Strait of Hormuz. President Donald Trump is now warning that the US will destroy an Iranian bridge or power plant every time Iran attacks a ship in the strategic waterway. At the same time, threats from Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthis are prompting some vessels to turn around rather than risk transiting the Bab el-Mandeb Strait at the southern end of the Red Sea. With two of the world’s most important maritime chokepoints under pressure, fears are growing of wider disruption to global trade and energy supplies.
