Why France is allowing terminally ill people to end their life | Focus on Europe

France has passed a bill that allows assisted dying under certain conditions. For Philippe who was terminally ill, the bill came too late. He had to go abroad with his family to end his life on his own terms.
France has passed a controversial assisted dying law that would allow certain adults with incurable illnesses to seek medical help to end their lives under strict conditions. Supporters view the measure as a step toward dignity, freedom of choice and end-of-life self-determination. Critics, including disability rights activists, warn of risks for vulnerable people and argue that access to palliative care should come first. The debate reflects deep divisions over euthanasia, patient rights and how society cares for people facing serious illness.
