A powerful symbol of history, identity, and cultural pride has returned home to Ivory Coast. Crowds gathered to celebrate the return of the Djidji Ayokwe, a sacred "talking drum," which was stolen by French colonial troops in 1916 and taken to France. Under new legislation, France has begun returning looted artefacts to their countries of origin, helping nations reconnect with important pieces of their heritage.
Dudù Kouate, a Senegalese multi-instrumentalist and conservator of African cultural and musical tradition, explains the drum’s cultural relevance as an object that unites the past with the present for so many.
