A surrogate mother successfully gave birth to a baby boy in a Texas hospital on Aug. 12 after refusing a California couple’s request that she receive an abortion.
McKenna West, an Alaskan nurse, has been in a back and forth legal battle with the baby’s biological parents, who requested she terminate the pregnancy after finding out at 20 weeks that the fetus was diagnosed with a severe but treatable heart condition called hypoplastic left heart syndrome or HLHS.
