UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres has warned that the current Ebola outbreak is the “fastest-growing” epidemic of its kind on record and urged the international community to step up funding and attention to contain it.
“We must also overcome another virus. The virus of indifference,” Guterres said.
“Because international attention, political focus and resources are still lagging behind the reality unfolding on the ground.”
Guterres said the United Nations had launched a humanitarian response plan that is currently 48 percent funded, and that existing funds would “last weeks, not months.”
According to Democratic Republic of Congo, as of Tuesday, there had been more than 2,700 deaths and more than 5,600 cases.
