Novo Nordisk invented the GLP-1 category, told the world that weight loss was the least important thing its drugs did, and then watched a competitor take market share by promising a bigger number.
Mike Doustdar became president and CEO of Novo Nordisk in August 2025, after 34 years at the company that began with a summer job making photocopies in its Vienna office. He tells Brian Sozzi what went wrong in unusually direct terms: Wegovy’s slogan was "Beyond Weight", the science behind it still holds, and the market simply did not want to hear it. Eli Lilly arrived second with a larger weight-loss figure and won on that alone.
His response was to stop arguing and match the number, so that the heart, kidney and liver benefits could arrive as a bonus rather than as the pitch. He also explains why he never believed the story that Ozempic was making airlines lighter, why food executives have not felt the impact yet, and what he thinks of the untested peptides people are buying online.
