A sold-out appearance by Wouter Basson, the former head of South Africa’s apartheid-era chemical and biological warfare program, has reignited a fierce debate about accountability, memory and free speech.
Known by critics as "Dr Death," Basson led the secretive "Project Coast" program during the final years of apartheid. He later faced accusations linked to the development of lethal toxins and other covert operations. Although Basson denied wrongdoing and was acquitted of criminal charges in 2002, his legacy remains deeply controversial.
