French left-wing politician Jean-Luc Melenchon says the French public is not racist and argues that issues such as healthcare and wages should take priority over debates surrounding the veil and abaya, during a debate at the Fete de l’Humanite in Essonne, France.
The statement comes after the French far-right political party National Rally promised “fines” for veiled Muslim women in the street.
