Mike Schroepfer grew Meta’s engineering organization from 150 people to 35,000, ran the Oculus and Instagram acquisitions, and was CTO from 2013 to 2022. He is now founding partner at Gigascale Capital, and one of his bets is a buoy: a wave-powered node that bobs in the open ocean, runs AI inference on chips cooled by seawater, and sends the answers back over satellite. He tells Brian Sozzi why the ocean is cheaper than space, why he does not think the grid will break, and what a nuclear power plant on the back of a truck is for. Schroepfer says on camera that he still advises Meta.
