François Picard is pleased to welcome Ian Bremmer, the American political scientist, author, and founder and president of Eurasia Group and GZERO Media.According to Bremmer, we may now be entering the autumn of the “Donroe Doctrine” and the MAGA era: an America First moment in which President Donald J. Trump promised to "make America great again" (in Gilded fashion). But is this the America voters had envisioned in 2024? When Trump first ran for president, Bremmer reminds us, he promised to “drain the swamp.” There was an expectation among many ordinary Americans that Trump would stand above Washington’s entrenched political interests and “fight for them.” There was also an appetite for an end to what Bremmer describes as America’s “forever wars”: from Vietnam to Iraq and Afghanistan. Instead, Bremmer argues, Americans have watched a president who appears “intent on making decisions and rules that don’t apply to him,” while frequently enriching himself, his family and his close associates. In Bremmer’s view, that places Trump in direct conflict with the standards, rules and norms of the country he was confided in to lead.
