The Taiwan Coast Guard said it fired a water cannon at a fishing vessel flying the Chinese flag after it allegedly trespassed into prohibited waters near Dongsha Island.
In a press release sent to Storyful, the coast guard said that two fishing boats were detected 5.5 nautical miles within restricted waters near Dongsha Island, an area controlled by Taiwan, on the morning of Thursday, October 1.
According to the coast guard, one of the vessels lifted its anchor and departed after being issued a broadcast warning, and the other one remained in place, refusing to leave.
After firing its water cannon into the air for 30 seconds as an additional warning, the coast guard began blasting the fishing boat’s wheelhouse, eventually prompting the crew to lift their anchor and leave the area.
