Students clashed with police at Evariste Galois high school in Sartrouville, near Paris, on October 5, as protests continued over the state of education in the country. Students are demanding more resources and better learning conditions after what they describe as years of underinvestment, calling on the government to address staffing shortages and poor infrastructure.
The unrest has led to clashes between students and police, with cars and trash bins torched, school entrances set on fire, and rocks and fireworks hurled at law enforcement. Police have responded by firing tear gas and using rubber-bullet launchers at students, leading to widespread accusations of excessive force being used against minors, mostly high school students. As many as 500 schools across the country have been closed, and police have arrested around 5,000 people since the start of the protests.
