Former Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon warned New York City council, during a hearing on October 5, about the potential risks of artificial intelligence, urging stronger oversight as governments grapple with how to regulate the technology. Coxon warned that AI companies do not fully control their advanced models and are rushing toward self-improving superintelligence at a dangerous pace. He warned there is a strong possibility advanced systems could pose an existential threat within the decade. The calls come as state and local governments consider new regulations while the Trump administration has favoured voluntary measures and greater industry self-policing.
