Student protesters in Tirana set fire to the justice, finance and education ministries and hurled stones on October 14 during a second day of demonstrations. Student organisers said the protest was over conditions at universities, higher education costs, financial support and lack of employment prospects after graduation.
Prime Minister Edi Rama’s government has faced growing discontent at perceived graft surrounding top officials. Protesters also dismiss opposition figures as unpalatable alternatives. The unrest comes after months of protests against Rama, triggered by the proposed development of a luxury resort along Albania’s southern coast backed by US President Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner.
