Eyewitness footage shows containers and debris floating at sea off the coast of Oman after a ship struck by a projectile sank near the Strait of Hormuz.
The Singapore-flagged GFS Pride, a small container vessel with a capacity of 2,824 twenty-foot equivalent units, sank while transiting the strait, according to maritime security sources.
“GFS PRIDE sustained damage and a fire on board, and has since sunk. All 21 crew members were safely evacuated. No injuries have been reported,” Singapore’s Maritime and Port Authority said in a statement on Wednesday, adding that the vessel had been transiting the strait on Tuesday.
Iran’s IRIB News Agency, citing Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps, reported that a vessel carrying more than 2,500 containers sank on the morning of October 14 after being struck by a naval mine in the southern part of the Strait of Hormuz.
