Nearly eight months after confirming his daughter Katherine Short—whom he shared with late wife Nancy Dolman—had died by suicide at the age of 42, the Father of the Bride star reflected on the weight of navigating mental health struggles. Martin began by comparing Nancy’s battle with cancer to their daughter’s mental health struggles during Selena Gomez’s Rare Impact Fund Benefit on Oct. 14, telling the audience that they are "both illnesses." He said during his speech, "Katherine fought for so long with extreme mental health issues: Borderline Personality [Disorder] and other things. She did the best she could until she couldn’t." The ‘Only Murders in the Building’ star commended his costar for raising funds and awareness for mental health initiatives to "help people understand that mental health is simply an illness, not to be hidden in the shadows or perceived as a family embarrassment."
