Cornell protesters have now held their own “trial” right outside a meeting of the university’s Board of Trustees. Around 60 demonstrators reportedly used megaphones, displayed the faces of administrators and the seven accused men on stakes and declared all seven guilty of every charge. Their fury was aimed at Cornell’s handling of the allegations—especially the fact that only two of the men were expelled through the university process. Organizers demanded that everyone involved be brought to justice and called for fraternities to be banned from campus. Inside, trustees reportedly pushed administrators for urgent answers and clearer details about how Cornell’s new fraternity-party ban will be enforced.
Then a real judge handed down a real ruling—but this is where the headline needs context. Justice Phaedra Perry-Bond rejected defendant Diego Sarabia’s request for restrictions on what the parties and their lawyers could say publicly. The judge found that the demanding standard for limiting speech had not been met and warned that the application risked becoming a “sideshow” distracting from the merits. That is a defeat for Sarabia’s gag-order request, not an epic win establishing anyone’s innocence. The mock verdict has no legal force, all seven men deny wrongdoing, none has been criminally charged and the civil lawsuit and renewed criminal investigation remain unresolved.
