“I knew that I had to do something.” Latin singer Nezza reflects on her defiant decision to sing the national anthem in Spanish at a Los Angeles Dodgers game on June 14, 2025.
At the time, communities in Los Angeles were reeling from a major ICE surge in the city. Though Nezza rehearsed the official Spanish-language version of the anthem, she was told to sing in English at the last moment. But she chose to sing “El Pendon Estrellado” instead.
Her decision is the subject of the new L.A. Times Short Docs mini-documentary “La Tierra del Valor,” or “The Home of the Brave," directed by Cristina Costantini.
