As gang violence escalates in neighbouring Haiti, Dominican Republic President Luis Abinader is calling for a stronger international security presence to tackle the crisis.
Speaking to Ghida Fakhry in this exclusive interview on Bigger Than Five, Abinader defends his hardline approach including the mass deportation of Haitians, among them pregnant women and children. “My responsibility begins at the frontier,” he insists.
Abinader also discusses the Dominican Republic’s progress towards zero hunger, making it the sixth country in Latin America to achieve this milestone. As Donald Trump reshapes US engagement with the region, Abinader addresses national sovereignty, regional security and the future of democracy — warning against leaders who cling to power. “Eight years is enough,” he says.
