A gunman killed one person and wounded five others, including a 12-year-old girl, in a shooting in a Paris suburb on Friday that French President Emmanuel Macron described as a “terrorist and racist” attack.
The shooting took place when the gunman opened fire with an automatic weapon at a petrol station, a medical centre and a children’s playground in Trappes, on the outskirts of Paris.
CCTV footage showed the gunman reloading his weapon outside the petrol station.
Trappes Mayor Ali Rabeh said the gunman drove near two mosques and appeared to have fired indiscriminately, targeting passersby at several locations, including a playground, possibly because of their perceived African or Arab origins.
“This is probably one of the first attempted mass killings motivated by Islamophobia and racism,” he told reporters.
