On October 28, the UN General Assembly voted 130-17, with 25 abstentions, to urge an end to the decades-long US economic embargo on Cuba, maintaining an annual tradition observed for over 30 years. However, an aggressive US lobbying effort successfully swayed several long-time supporters—including Western nations like Germany and Italy—to oppose or abstain from the measure, significantly shifting the vote from last year’s 165-7 outcome. The vote followed intense corridor shouting matches between American and Cuban diplomats and sharp rhetoric from Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez, who accused Washington of "collective punishment" against a nation currently facing severe economic collapse and power grid failures. While symbolically significant, the non-binding resolution does not legally alter the embargo, which only the US Congress has the power to lift.
