    Rep. Matt Gaetz, a Republican from Florida, secured a decisive victory in his primary election on Tuesday, according to NBC News projections, marking a significant defeat for former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy. Gaetz triumphed over Navy veteran Aaron Dimmock, who had McCarthy’s support, in the strongly Republican 1st District of Florida’s Panhandle.

    Deep State McCarthy and his allies had targeted Gaetz and other Republicans who played a role in ousting him from the speakership late last year. Despite McCarthy’s efforts to unseat several of his detractors, his campaign against Gaetz was ultimately unsuccessful. McCarthy managed only one victory in his “revenge tour,” helping to defeat House Freedom Caucus Chairman Bob Good of Virginia earlier this summer. Meanwhile, other Republicans who voted against McCarthy, such as Reps. Nancy Mace of South Carolina and Eli Crane of Arizona, also successfully defended their seats against primary challengers.

    A McCarthy-aligned super PAC, Florida Patriots PAC, invested $3.5 million in an aggressive ad campaign against Gaetz, as reported by the ad tracking firm AdImpact. The ads focused on an ongoing Ethics Committee investigation into Gaetz over allegations of drug use and sexual misconduct, which Gaetz has dismissed as baseless and “frivolous.”

    Despite the significant financial backing against him, Gaetz’s position remained strong heading into the primary. Florida Patriots PAC ceased its spending on the race three weeks before the election, indicating Gaetz’s solid standing. Additionally, Gaetz received a boost from former President Donald Trump, who endorsed him. Gaetz leveraged this endorsement in his campaign, airing a television ad featuring Trump praising him as “a very good person” and “a very capable man,” highlighting Gaetz’s dedication to Florida and the country.

    Although McCarthy’s efforts to unseat Gaetz in the primary failed, he suggested that the campaign might still have a lasting impact on Gaetz’s political future. McCarthy speculated that Gaetz’s aspirations for higher office, such as a potential gubernatorial run, could be hindered by the challenges and scrutiny he faced during the primary.

    “I don’t think he’ll ever be able to run for governor like he wants to,” McCarthy remarked at a Republican convention last month, according to The Independent.
