Premiering in May at the Cannes Film Festival, “The Apprentice” quickly became a source of political controversy. A spokesperson for Trump’s campaign, Steven Cheung, criticized the film as “pure malicious defamation” and suggested that the campaign might pursue legal action against what he termed “blatantly false assertions.” However, it remains unclear if any lawsuit has been filed.
The controversy surrounding the film partly stems from a dramatized scene that depicts an alleged incident in which Trump sexually assaulted his first wife, Ivana. In her 1990 divorce deposition, Ivana Trump accused Donald Trump of rape but later clarified that she was not speaking in a literal sense, instead feeling violated in another context. Donald Trump denied the allegation, and Ivana Trump passed away in 2022.
Directed by Iranian-Danish filmmaker Ali Abbasi and written by Vanity Fair journalist Gabriel Sherman, who has long covered Trump and his allies, the film delves into the complexities of Trump’s early life and political rise. Roy Cohn, portrayed in the film, was a significant influence on Trump before he died of AIDS-related complications in 1986.
