Donald Trump has shaken up US policy since taking office at the start of last week. Mass deportations of irregular migrants and the freezing of foreign aid budgets are affecting countries well beyond the US borders. South-American Colombia especially has been at the sharp end of those policies. After the Trump presidency forced the government in Bogotá to accept deported migrants the country’s anti-drug operations are now in jeopardy.
A large part of Colombia’s fleet of anti-narcotics helicopters has been grounded after Washington ended aid payments. The aircraft belong to the United States and the US also pays for their maintenance. Colombia is the biggest cocaine producer in the world with most of the drug smuggled to the United States.
