President Donald Trump’s tariff rhetoric seems to fuel the flames of the US-China trade war, with China announcing retaliatory tariffs and antitrust probes on Big Tech names. Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) fellow on international political economy Zongyuan Zoe Liu joins Asking for a Trend with Josh Lipton to outline her view that Trump and China’s President Xi Jinping are "uniquely positioned at this moment to strike a deal."
"I do think China is better prepared this time than the last round of trade war," Liu says, explaining, "Part of the reason is because China has accumulated experience in the past few years, but more importantly, over the past few years, China has also been augmenting and refining its tools, as well as domestic legislative and administrative measures to hit back."
She adds that Trump and Jinping are in a "unique position" to come to an agreement as Trump "has no problem walking back of the decisions that he made yesterday," while Chinese leadership "needs the US, perhaps more than before, in the sense that he [needs a] better relationship so that it can inject confidence in the Chinese economy."
