Washington, DC agents are dismantling homeless encampments and confiscating tents after Trump called to “clean up” the city.
“We have notified the Mayor of Washington, DC, that she must clean up all of the unsightly homeless encampments in the city, specifically including the ones outside the State Department and near the White House,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “If she is not capable of doing so, we will be forced to do it for her!”
In February, Trump argued for a federal takeover of the city, claiming local officials had failed to address crime and homelessness effectively.
Following his remarks, Washington, DC, announced a crackdown on 12 encampments across the capital, stating that homeless individuals would be offered the option to move into “safer shelters or housing.”
Despite a mandatory two-week eviction notice, several homeless individuals were forcibly removed just one day after receiving notice, according to an NBC report.
“Housing instability and homelessness are are increasingly criminalised and scapegoated by policymakers seeking to placate one another,” said New America NGO.
“These cleanups aren’t paired with policies or plans to curb the homelessness epidemic and tackle the housing crisis that underpins it.”
City officials claim the number of tents has been cut in half over two years, with several new shelters opened and housing vouchers expanded.
Washington, DC—one of the wealthiest cities in the US—is home to approximately 6,000 homeless individuals, according to a 2024 report.
Some live in tents on federal land near iconic landmarks.
