Instead of visiting the United States, Canada’s new prime minister, Mark Carney, has travelled to Europe for his first foreign visit. This comes as US president Donald Trump has attacked Canada’s sovereignty and economy.
Carney’s first stop was Paris where he met with French President Emmanuel Macron, before heading to the UK. Carney said he is looking for Canada to strengthen ties with reliable allies.
Carney has no plans to visit Washington at the moment, but says he will do if Donald Trump shows respect for Canada’s sovereignty. At the same time, he underlined the importance of Canadian and European ties with the United States.
