President Biden has said "It’s time for this war to end", as he made a surprise announcement of a phased plan to bring about a ceasefire in Gaza.
Israel appears to have been caught somewhat off-guard by the timing of his words.
The Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu insisted the war would not end until all goals – including the "elimination of Hamas’ military and governmental capabilities" – were achieved.
