On Monday, Syria marked the one year anniversary of the end of a brutal dictatorship.
Thousands took to the streets, and a military parade was held in the capital Damascus, to celebrate the moment when former president Bashar al-Assad was deposed by Islamist rebels. His regime fell to a lightning offensive led by current President Ahmad al Sharaa. It was hoped that the end of Syria’s 14-year civil war would bring relief and a measure of prosperity to the country – but rebuilding has barely started.
