In a startling turn of events, a 1-year-old “miracle baby” survived two harrowing days in a ditch along a Louisiana highway, just a few miles from where his 4-year-old brother’s body was discovered, authorities reported.
The children’s mother, Aaliyah N. Jack, was arrested at a Mississippi train station, allegedly attempting to flee town, according to Calcasieu Parish Sheriff Stitch Guillory during a news conference on Tuesday afternoon.

The tragic sequence began Monday afternoon when Louisiana authorities were alerted to a body found in the water behind the Vinton Welcome Center, a rest stop in Calcasieu Parish. The body was identified as a 4-year-old child, though the cause of death is still undetermined.
Desperate to identify the child, deputies sent out a media alert. Shortly after, a concerned individual contacted the sheriff’s office, fearing the missing child might be a relative.
Further investigation revealed that the 4-year-old had last been seen with Jack and his 1-year-old brother. The sheriff’s office withheld the children’s names from the public.

Local law enforcement agencies quickly issued an alert for Jack, resulting in an arrest warrant for failure to report a missing child. On Monday night, police in Meridian, Mississippi, arrested Jack, but she was without her 1-year-old son. Meridian police declined to comment on the case.
The next morning, a truck driver spotted the baby near Interstate 10, several miles from where the 4-year-old’s body was found. Sheriff Guillory noted video footage showing the baby crawling toward the busy highway.

“We see this 1-year-old as our miracle baby because he survived. Unbelievable,” Guillory said. “This child spent two days out in the weather on the side of a highway. Thank God that trucker saw him.”
The baby had a few insect bites but appeared to be “in good spirits,” Guillory reported. The child was taken to a hospital for evaluation and will be placed in the custody of child protective services.
The stark contrast between the miraculous survival of the baby and the tragic death of his brother has left the community in shock. Authorities are continuing their investigation to uncover the events leading up to this distressing situation.
