Let’s look at the Gospel Accounts found only in the book of Matthew:
*Joseph’s dream – Matthew 1:20-24
The visit of the wise men – Matthew 2:1-12
*Escape to Egypt – Matthew 2:13-15
*Slaughter of the children – Matthew 2:16-18
*The death of Judas – Matthew 27:3-10
The dream of Pilate’s wife – Matthew 27:19
The other resurrections – Matthew 27:52
The bribery of the guards – Matthew 28:11-15
*The baptism emphasis in the Great Commission – Matthew 28:19-20
Matthew records nine special events that are not mentioned in any of the other Gospels.
In each case, the most apparent reason for Matthew’s choice has to do with his purpose in communicating the gospel to Jewish people.
Five cases are fulfillments of Old Testament prophecies. The other four would have been of particular interest to the Jews of Matthew’s day.
