Alongside this technological surge, the world will experience a global weaponry addiction, weather gone wild, instant worldwide awareness of earthquakes, and man-made famines exacerbated by things like genetically altered food supplies.
2. The Final Target: Escalating Global Hatred and Greedy Prophets: Matthew 24:8-13; Peter’s epistles.
Jesus explicitly warned that the end of days would feature a globally united, daily hatred against the Jewish people and the nation of Israel. Hand in hand with this will be an escalating hatred for true, biblical Christians. Adding to the chaos, Barnett highlights that the church itself will be plagued by money-hungry false teachers who exploit followers with deceptive, televised promises of turning their $1 bills into $20 bills. Because of this abounding lawlessness, the spiritual zeal of many will grow cold.
3. The Nauseating Church: The Deadly Trap of the Lukewarm Life: Revelation 3:14-17.
Summary: Barnett brings a fascinating historical and geographical context to Jesus’s warning to the church of Laodicea. Jesus did not mean He wanted believers to be "cold" in a sinful way; rather, He wanted them to either be like the refreshing ice-cold spring waters of Colossae, or the therapeutic, cleansing hot thermal springs of Hierapolis. Instead, like Laodicea’s tepid aqueducts, the modern church has become lukewarm. Sedated by advanced medicine, massive hospitals, and endless modern conveniences, we falsely believe we have "need of nothing," completely unaware that we are actually spiritually wretched, poor, blind, and naked.
4. Gold Refined in the Fire: Triumphing Through Adversity: Revelation 3:18-19.
What is the antidote to this spiritual numbness? Jesus counsels believers to "buy from me gold refined in the fire". Barnett explains that this means actively choosing to triumph through adversity. Instead of throwing in the towel when life gets difficult, we must faithfully endure hardship and depend on God. This refining process produces a faith that is indestructible and builds a life that will ultimately survive the judgment seat of Christ.
