Manchester mayor Andy Burnham has announced he intends to return to Westminster. He plans to stand in a by-election in Makerfield, after Labour MP Josh Simons agreed to step aside to let Burnham run. Sir Keir Starmer won’t block Burnham’s return, Sky News understands. Burnham’s last attempt to stand in a by-election was blocked by Labour’s National Executive Committee.
The announcement increases the pressure on the prime minister, after Health Secretary Wes Streeting resigned from the government and told the prime minister that "when we needed vision, there was a vacuum."
