In this session, we will discover that just having the Bible translated into our language isn’t enough; we must know how to correctly understand it. Here is what we will cover:
1. Wolverines, Spartans, and the Historic Context
Scripture References: 2 Timothy 2:15 (Paul instructing Timothy to "rightly divide the scriptures"), the Gospels (Jesus debating religious leaders).
Summary of Coverage: If you read a headline today that said "The Wolverines beat the Spartans," you wouldn’t assume a literal forest creature fought an ancient Greek warrior. You understand the cultural and historical context of college mascots! We will look at why applying the "historic, grammatical, literal" method of interpretation is absolutely essential so we don’t invent crazy meanings from biblical texts.
2. Exegesis vs. Eisegesis: The Danger of Cultic Reading
Scripture References: Ecclesiastes (often taken out of context by cults).
Summary of Coverage: We will learn the two distinct methods of handling the Bible. Eisegesis means reading into the text what you already want it to say—a dangerous method frequently used by cults who string detached verses together. True biblical study uses Exegesis, which means starting with the Word and drawing the truth out of it.
3. The Obelisk of the Exodus in the Heart of Rome
Scripture References: Exodus 11–12 (The final plague and the death of Pharaoh’s firstborn).
Summary of Coverage: Proper interpretation relies on two pillars: everything happened somewhere and sometime. To prove this, we will travel to Rome to look at a massive Egyptian obelisk standing right between the Lateran and the Scala Sancta (where Martin Luther crawled on his knees). Historical dating proves this obelisk was made around 1446 BC. Even secular sources like National Geographic note that the Pharaoh who built it mysteriously lost his oldest son prematurely—perfectly aligning with the biblical account of the Passover and the Death Angel.
