The 17-5-17 Blueprint: Decoding Old Testament Structure–Have you ever tried reading straight through the Old Testament, only to get completely lost in the timeline of the prophets and kings? Join John Barnett as we unlock the simple, masterful structure behind the first half of your Bible.
In this session, we will clear up the confusion of the biblical timeline and discover how the historical books and the prophets perfectly interleave. Here is what we will cover:
1. The Scribe’s Masterpiece: Ezra and the Longest Psalm–Psalm 119
Summary of Coverage: After the 70-year Babylonian exile, Ezra led a congregation of 50,000 worldly Jews back to Jerusalem. We will learn how Ezra painstakingly copied the ancient Phoenician and hieroglyphic scriptures into the modern Hebrew block letters we know today. Even more fascinating, Jewish scholars believe Ezra wrote Psalm 119—the longest chapter in the Bible—as a magnificent "book within a book" to celebrate the Word of God after completing this massive copying project.
2. The Prophet’s Tears and the Prophetic Scope
Scripture References: Lamentations, Daniel, Haggai, Zechariah 12–14, and Malachi.
Summary of Coverage: We will look at the prophets in their true historical context. You will hear the heartbreaking, eyewitness account of Jeremiah in Lamentations as he looked over the dead bodies and destruction of Jerusalem in 586 BC. We will also explore how Daniel laid the foundational prophetic scope of the future, why Haggai rebuked the returning Israelites for building cedar-paneled houses while the Temple lay in ruins, and how Zechariah looked past the blackened stones of the rebuilt wall to see the Second Coming.
3. The 17-5-17 Framework of History
Scripture References: The 39 Books of the Old Testament (interleaving books like Job into Genesis, or Proverbs into Kings).
Summary of Coverage: The Old Testament is not arranged chronologically, which is why it can be so hard to follow. We will give you the ultimate key to understanding it: the 17-5-17 structure. You will discover how the 17 Historical books, 5 Wisdom books, and 17 Prophetic books are divided into "pre-exile" and "post-exile" periods. By learning to mentally interleave the prophets and the wisdom literature directly into the historical books where they belong, the entire Old Testament will suddenly make perfect sense.
