How Ezra Saved the Scriptures–Have you ever wondered how the 39 books of the Old Testament were organized, or how the ancient texts survived the centuries of captivity? Join John Barnett as we explore the monumental, often-overlooked life of Ezra.
In this session, we will discover how one man single-handedly rescued the Word of God from being lost to a changing culture and gave us the structure of the Old Testament we still use today. Here is what we will cover:
1. From Hieroglyphics to Block Letters: The Morphing of Hebrew
Scripture References: The Pentateuch (Books of Moses) and the writings of David.
Summary of Coverage: Did you know that the Hebrew language constantly evolved over the centuries? Moses wrote the first books around 1446 BC using an Egyptian-influenced Hebrew, while David and the prophets (around 1000 BC) wrote in a Phoenician-influenced Hebrew. By the time the Israelites returned from their 70-year captivity in Babylon around 500 BC, the language had morphed so much that the people could no longer read their own Bible! We will explore how Ezra stepped into this crisis to save the Scriptures.
2. The Second Moses and the Human Xerox Machines
Scripture References: New Testament references to the Scribes and Pharisees.
Summary of Coverage: Because the people could no longer read the ancient texts, Ezra painstakingly hand-copied the Pentateuch, the prophets, the history books, and the wisdom literature into the modern, "block letter" biblical Hebrew that is still used today. We will learn why Ezra is revered by the Jews as second only to Moses, and how he became the father of the "scribes"—the dedicated copyists who acted as human Xerox machines to preserve the Bible all the way into the New Testament era.
3. The 17-5-17 Blueprint of the Old Testament
Scripture References: The 39 Books of the Old Testament.
Summary of Coverage: The Old Testament isn’t just a random collection of ancient scrolls; it has a brilliant, divine design. Ezra compiled and arranged the 39 books of the Old Testament into three beautiful, structural divisions: 17 books of History, 5 books of Wisdom literature, and 17 books of Prophecy. We will uncover the reason behind this specific order and how this 17-5-17 layout helps us easily navigate God’s Word.
