Shifting Through Time – Seeing History As God Sees It.
Do you have trouble keeping the vast timeline of the Bible straight in your mind? Join John Barnett as we unlock a simple, powerful way to navigate the entire scope of human history.
In this session, we will break down the timeline of the scriptures and discover why understanding the historical and cultural backdrop of the Bible is the ultimate key to interpreting it correctly. Here is what we will cover:
1. The 50-Year Miracle: Penning the New Testament–James, 1 & 2 Thessalonians, and Revelation.
Summary of Coverage: Unlike the Old Testament, which took over 1,000 years to write
, the 27 books of the New Testament were penned in a remarkably brief 50-year window. We will trace this rapid timeline, starting around 45 AD with the very first book written by James—Jesus’ earthly brother and the pastor of the first church in Jerusalem. We will then follow the timeline through Paul’s letters to the Thessalonians, all the way to 95 AD when John wrote Revelation while exiled on the island of Patmos by Emperor Domitian.
2. Wolverines, Spartans, and the Agony of the Race
Scripture References: The Epistles of Paul (specifically his references to running the race and struggling together).
Summary of Coverage: Why did Paul describe the Christian life as an "agonizing" struggle? Because "context is king"! Just as a modern person immediately understands the cultural context of sports teams like the "Wolverines" and "Spartans," first-century believers instantly understood Paul’s use of the Greek word agon. Every Roman town had an agon (a stadium), which was literally a place of agony where athletes ran until they dropped. We will explore how knowing this historical context transforms Paul’s words into a profound call for believers to run the grueling Christian race together toward Jesus.
3. The 1,000-Year Mental Shifter
Scripture References: General biblical timeline (Adam, Noah, Abraham, David, and Christ).
Summary of Coverage: We will give you a brilliant mental model to perfectly track biblical history using the concept of a car’s gear shifter. Think of Jesus Christ as the center, or "neutral". From there, human history falls into exact 1,000-year "clicks" or steps. One click back is King David (1,000 BC), two clicks back is Abraham (2,000 BC), three clicks back is Noah and the flood (3,000 BC), and four clicks back is Adam (4,000 BC). By looking at history the way God lays it out, the entire Bible will suddenly click into place.
