A year after Bryan Kohberger pleaded guilty to the 2022 murders of four University of Idaho students, the 31-year-old shared that his plea was “hinged on false promises and blatant disinformation.” In a July 26 statement sent to The New York Times through his family, Kohberger said he has filed a petition seeking to withdraw his guilty plea and intends to enter a not-guilty plea, calling the state’s account of the fatal stabbings of Kaylee Goncalves, 21, Madison Mogen, 21, Xana Kernodle, 20 and Ethan Chapin, 20, “a work of fiction.” Kohberger, who is serving four consecutive life sentences, said he wants prosecutors to prove their case at trial—even if they again seek the death penalty. However, during his July 2025 plea hearing, he answered “yes” under oath when asked if he killed each victim willfully, unlawfully and with premeditation.
