A newly opened suspension bridge in Indonesia collapsed during its ribbon-cutting ceremony on Aug 30 after more than 50 people crowded onto the structure, exceeding its capacity and causing a sling rope to break loose from its main fastening. The bridge tilted, sending villagers and officials plunging toward the creek below. Several people suffered minor injuries, and the bridge was closed as officials investigated its structural integrity.
