Parts of North Carolina Highway 12 buckled and were submerged under water on September 24, as a powerful nor’easter pushed aggressive tidewaters and strong waves inland across the Outer Banks. Live Department of Transportation cameras captured severe damage near Pea Island, prompting authorities to close the highway in both directions between the Basnight Bridge and Rodanthe while repair crews assess the situation.
