On September 17, a group of alert students intervened to stop a moving Hollidaysburg Area School District school bus after the driver suffered a medical episode. When the driver failed to respond to a student asking to get off, tenth-grader Alexis Smith and her classmates quickly realized something was wrong, shouted instructions to engage the brakes, and successfully brought the bus to a halt. Smith then used the radio to call for emergency help and checked the driver’s vital signs until responders arrived. The school district praised Smith for her quick thinking and heroism, and local reports confirmed the driver has since recovered and returned to his route.
