Mary Gibbs, the voice behind Boo in Monsters, Inc., marked her 30th birthday with a sweet look back at the unconventional way Pixar captured her iconic childhood performance. Ahead of the 2001 Disney and Pixar film’s 25th anniversary, Gibbs reflected on recording Boo’s memorable giggles, chatter and “Kitty” line as a toddler. As Gibbs previously told Newsweek, her dad Rob Gibbs—a longtime Pixar story artist—first brought her into the studio so animators could study a real little girl’s movements and use her voice for temporary dialogue. But Mary’s natural reactions were too perfect to replace, so the crew followed her around with a microphone while she played. The actress also shared that fans sometimes cry when they learn she was the voice behind Boo, saying, “Growing up being a part of, of that movie, it’s been really awesome.”
